How does a seat belt work?

11/09/2024

Despite the constant updates in the automotive world, the frantic pace of development of new technologies, one thing remains unchanged — the seat belt. This system serves as the main defender in emergency situations. It has been saving lives for over 70 years, the retractable system prevents the risk of serious injury.

Mechanism

4)The belt is both a necessary, precise device and a primitive safety system.

Let's look at the components:

The fastener is an element of the seat belt that is connected to the car body. It is designed to restrain passengers during sudden movements and prevent the seat backs from tilting back at the wrong time. Typically, the fastener is located just above shoulder level to the left of the driver and to the right of the front passenger.

The seat belt buckle ensures a secure connection. The belt tongue is inserted into it, which is fixed using a mechanism in the lock.

A tension band holds a person in the car seat. It visually starts from the fastener and fixes the body, clinging with a tongue in the lock. This tape is made from durable fibers that can withstand significant loads.

2)Inertial reels are responsible for tensioning the tape and winding it up when fastening.

3)The limiters gradually increase the length of the tape during an emergency, providing additional safety.

1)Pretensioner. At the moment of a collision, the sensors send a signal to the control unit to quickly tension the belt, minimizing the possibility of body displacement.

Possible faults

— inability to retract and pull out of the coil;

— wear of the mechanism;

— jamming of the holder button;

— loose fixation of the passenger’s body.

For repair work, it is strictly recommended to contact car service specialists. After all, working with mechanisms of this type is quite difficult. Any mistake when working independently can lead to the destruction of the entire system. After which there will be a need to immediately replace the entire installation.

There is a certain repair sequence:

— unscrewing the mechanism from the body;

— cleaning the system, eliminating breakdowns inside;

— washing with a special cleaner and lubricating parts with friction;

— reassembly of the mechanism;

— Attaching back to the interior body.

It is worth remembering that the use of a seat belt is mandatory for everyone: passengers and the driver. You should not neglect this and replace broken belts in a timely manner.
