The ABS light comes on on the control panel, what should I do?

10/19/2024

The ABS indicator sometimes lights up on the car dashboard, the purpose of which not every driver knows. Almost all modern cars have ABS both front and rear, which significantly affects the stability and handling of the vehicle.

But why did the ABS indicator light come on, what is the reason for this, and how can you solve the problem?

What is it?

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) in a car is designed to prevent the wheels from locking during braking. The essence of this technology is directly reflected in its name.

If one of the wheels locks while driving, the system will automatically reduce pressure on the brakes, allowing the wheel to spin slightly. The driver may notice the wheels temporarily spinning and stopping for short periods of time, even while actively applying the brakes.

This action plays a key role in braking safety and helps the vehicle come to a smooth, complete stop.

The anti-lock braking system helps the driver maintain control of the car during heavy braking. If there is no such system, the wheels may lock in the event of an emergency brake, resulting in loss of control; Even when trying to get the car out of a slide or stop it, the driver will not be able to regain control.

Reasons for the appearance of the ABS signal on the panel

The first sign of a malfunctioning anti-lock braking system (ABS) is the warning light on the dashboard. Like other important electronic systems in your vehicle, ABS performs a self-diagnosis each time the ignition is turned on.

If any faults are found during this test, an indicator will appear on the panel and remain on. Drivers should not be confused if the ABS symbol lights up for a few seconds after the engine starts: this indicates that the system is being checked.

Causes of malfunction of the ABS system in a car:

Dirty ABS sensors installed on the front or rear wheels. This can lead to failures in the transmission of information, which will lead to incorrect conclusions about the state of the sensors:

It is also possible that the sensors responsible for wheel rotation may break down.

Malfunctions of the crown on the wheel hub can be another reason.

Problems with data transmission between the sensors and the control unit can interfere with the correct operation of the system.

In addition, the module itself may fail.

It is important to distinguish between ABS system malfunctions and general problems with the vehicle's braking system. Difficulty with the brakes is usually indicated by a red exclamation mark on the instrument panel.

What should I do if the ABS light comes on?

First, the driver needs to carry out diagnostics to accurately determine whether there is a problem, and not just a malfunction in the car’s instrument panel.

To check the ABS system, you can try activating it on an empty and flat road: increase the speed to 40 kilometers per hour and sharply press the brakes to come to a complete stop. If the indicator continues to light, this means that you should contact a car service specialist.

It is also worth checking the front and rear ABS sensors and their units for damage and integrity. One of the sensors on the wheel may be bent or damaged, which could cause the warning sign to appear.

The condition of cables and connections must also be assessed. If the ABS indicator periodically lights up and goes out while driving, the reason lies precisely in the wires.

Important!

Trying to turn off the ABS signal yourself or performing complex repairs is not recommended. Only a qualified technician can troubleshoot the ABS module or sensor.

It is important to promptly pay attention to the condition of the system, as it significantly affects the vehicle’s handling and helps ensure safety during emergency braking.
